Way Back Wednesday #1: MMPR Season 1

Hey everyone, it's Pinky, with your first Way Back Wednesday! I first off, want to apologize for the wait with this. I bit off a little more than I could chew watching all 60 episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1 and taking thorough notes on everything. So, let's jump into it and reminisce.

The story begins with our villainess, Rita Repulsa with her band of...misfits(?), Baboo, Squatt, Finster, and her right hand man Goldar immediately being freed from "space dumpster" by two eager astronauts. After being freed from her 10, 000 year prison, Rita immediately decides to attack Earth...by immediately setting up shop on the Moon. I don't know about you, but if I wanted to conquer the Earth, and my hideout looked like Caesar's Palace on acid, I'd set up shop in Las Vegas and not the moon, but that's just me. ^_~*

So fast forward to Angel Grove Youth Center Gym and Juice Bar (couldn't fit a Starbucks in there?), where we meet Jason and Zach sparring, Kimberly doing gymnastics on the balance beam, Trini doing what I think are katas, and Billy about to enroll in Jason's karate class. Everyone else (and I mean everyone) is pretty much irrelevant at this point, so we'll just focus on them at this point. So Rita attacks the Earth, triggers an earthquake, and this causes Zordon and Alpha 5 to recruit a "team of teenagers with attitudes" and teleport them to the command center.

Zordon, an inter-dimensional "floating head" and his assistant Alpha 5 give our young teens their Power Morphers, and charge them with protecting Angel Grove City and the world as the Power Rangers; a force of good a justice. At first the team is skeptical, until they get 100 yards away from the Command Center and are attacked by Rita's foot soldiers, The Putty Patrol. The teens morph for the first time, calling on their awesome powers, including a fleet of mechanical beasts called Zords, form the mighty Megazord, and save the day.

Over the course of the first season, each Ranger obtains a unique weapon (Zach, Power Axe/Cosmic Cannon; Kimberly, Power Bow/Battle Bow; Trini, Power Daggers/Dino Daggers; Billy, Power Lance/Mighty Mace; Jason, Power Sword), an arsenal of vehicles (The Rad Bug, different zords), new enemies (Tommy and Scorpina), a new ally (Tommy, who becomes the 6th, Green Ranger), and lots of challenges along the way.

All in all, watching Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Season 1 gave me an all new appreciation for the series that I haven't had since I was 10 year old watching it for the first time. I hope you'll come back next week for MMPR Season 1 spotlight character and we'll build up to a re-cap of Season 2. Till next time, this is Pinky, signing off.
